Rebecca Davidson

I'm walking for Liam.

The statistics are pretty heavy - the biggest killer of men under 45, 125 people taking their own lives EACH week in the UK. But it’s pretty easy to feel disconnected from numbers.

Those numbers became my reality just under two years ago with the death of my partner, Liam. That bolt out of the blue changed everything. His bright future, our shared plans. Everything was gone and I was stood shellshocked in the crater of what was our life.

I was and still am mad. Mad at a world where a kind, loving person thinks there is no other way forward. Mad at the insensitive systems and processes those bereaved by suicide must face after the death of their loved one.

Yes it’s an immensely difficult problem to tackle. We will never know what is happening in somebody else’s mind. But I can guarantee that we are not doing enough. Those scary numbers and my first hand experience show there is no time to waste. In the memory of those we have lost, we must say no more.

This October I'm taking on the Lost Hours Walk to deal with grief differently and defiantly, and to remember our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, partners and friends lost to suicide.

Here’s why:

On average, 125 people take their own lives every week in the UK.

75% of people who take their own lives are not known to mental health services or have not been in touch with mental health services within the last year.

135 people are directly affected by every suicide.

We’re coming together across the country to send a message that that’s not ok. We’re taking to the streets, parks, pavements, public footpaths and promenades to walk against struggling in silence, against being alone, against living miserably.

Anyone can hit crisis point. CALM’s free, anonymous and confidential helpline and webchat are there for anyone who needs support. They’re open from 5pm-midnight every day. Just £8 is enough to fund a professionally-trained helpline worker to answer a call that could save a life. Your support will help fund CALM’s life-saving services when they’re needed most.
