I'm fundraising for CALM

I’m walking against suicide.

This October - when Robbie should be celebrating his 20th birthday - I'm taking on the Lost Hours Walk to deal with grief differently and defiantly, and to remember our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, partners and friends.

As well as walking 26miles for the lost hours walk I’m climbing 20 Munro’s before what would have been Robbie’s 20th birthday.

One of the last things we planned was to climb Ben Lomond together  !

On average, 125 people take their own lives every week in the UK.

75% of people who take their own lives are not known to mental health services or have not been in touch with mental health services within the last year.

135 people are directly affected by every suicide.

We’re coming together across the country to send a message that that’s not ok. We’re taking to the streets, parks, pavements, public footpaths and promenades to walk against struggling in silence, against being alone, against living miserably.

Anyone can hit crisis point. CALM’s free, anonymous and confidential helpline and webchat are there for anyone who needs support. They’re open from 5pm-midnight every day. Just £8 is enough to fund a professionally-trained helpline worker to answer a call that could save a life. Your support will help fund CALM’s life-saving services when they’re needed most.

Getting there...

Wednesday 30th Sep
It’s been 12 weeks since I last spoke to Robbie; he called to tell me he’d be home late and ask me to leave the door open for him - he didn’t have keys.
He never came home.
I can’t even begin to express the heartbreak. The ways my life has changed. The ways I’ve changed.

People tell me I’m so strong and in so many ways they’re right but it’s not how I feel. I feel broken. Like an essential part of me is missing.

I am strong though. Every day I wake up and I get up. Some days I struggle but I carry on. Some days I get my walking boots on and hit the hills.  Today saw me complete Munro’s 17 and 18 of my #20forhis20th challenge.

I’m proud of me. I know Robbie would be proud of me too.

8 weeks...

Wednesday 2nd Sep
It’s now been 8 long weeks since my boy took his own life. 56 days of missing him. 1334 hours I’ve lived that he hasn’t. 80,640 minutes of wishing I could just have 5 more minutes with him to hug him, tell him how proud I am of him and how much I love him.
His death has broken me in ways that will never be repaired.
Most days I wake up and feel too heavy to even get out of bed.
The Robbie shaped hole in my heart will never be filled.
Donating just £8 covers the cost of answering 1 call to CALMzone. That’s one life you can potentially save for less than a tenner! One family who can be spared the heartache that my wee family is feeling.

In a little under 8 weeks my team and I will take part in the Lost Hours Walk.
I know times are tough with Covid but if all you can afford to donate is £1 just know that every penny makes a difference and is very much appreciated by the charity and even more so by me.

The Plan...

Thursday 13th Aug
is to walk  from Ratho to Airdrie - mainly following the NCR75 - in memory of Robbie and to raise money for CALM who support people who are in crisis and considering suicide.

Some team members will join me for the full 26 miles and others will join me for stretches of it.

I’ll be finalising the route over the next couple of days and will update the blog with a map.
