Walking to remember Mark Bushby

Lost Hours Walk

It has almost been a year. Walk with us. We are fundraising for CALM.

On Sunday 27th September, the day before the first anniversary of Mark’s death, we are walking against suicide in support of CALM. I hope that as many people as possible can join our team and walk with the girls and I, or donate to this vitally important cause.

THE WALK

At the moment this can take place within the government Covid-19 guidelines as an organised outdoor activity affiliated to a charity. We have a letter of authority from CALM and I will do a risk assessment plus have the contact details of everyone taking part.

We will walk in groups of no more than 6.

We will be walking a total of 11 km, and, in true Mark style, taking in two of his favourite local pubs.

10am: Meet at St Joseph’s College. Parking and refreshments available. Set off around 10.30am.

12pm: Stop off at the Fox and Hounds, Caversham for a bite (thanks Kerri and Kev) and a drink (thanks West Berkshire Brewery).

3pm: End at The Packhorse, Mapledurham. Minibus return available for anyone parked at St Joseph’s.

Children, dogs, friends, runners, joggers, walkers, slowcoaches.... all are welcome, the more the merrier, and there’s no obligation to join for the whole route. We will go ahead whatever the weather! The first part (4k) is flat and buggy/ scooter friendly. The second part (7k) is mostly gravelly footpath.

WHY?

We hope that as many people as possible can join us to remember Mark, as well as to highlight the importance of actively promoting mental health amongst young men.

In other words...we are taking on CALM’s Lost Hours Walk to deal with grief differently and defiantly, and to remember our sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, partners and friends lost to suicide.

On average, 125 people take their own lives every week in the UK. Mark was one of those.

75% of people who take their own lives are not known to mental health services or have not been in touch with mental health services within the last year. Mark was one of those.

135 people are directly affected by every suicide. Mark’s death has impacted hundreds more than this.

CALM says: We’re coming together across the country to send a message that that’s not ok. We’re taking to the streets, parks, pavements, public footpaths and promenades to walk against struggling in silence, against being alone, against living miserably.

Anyone can hit crisis point. CALM’s free, anonymous and confidential helpline and webchat are there for anyone who needs support. They’re open from 5pm-midnight every day. Just £8 is enough to fund a professionally-trained helpline worker to answer a call that could save a life. Your support will help fund CALM’s life-saving services when they’re needed most.

You can join my team or donate to my walk below.
