I'm fundraising for CALM

I’m walking against suicide.

For the last 16 years I have been a Police Officer, one of my core functions has been to help others and sadly provide support to grieving families who have suffered the loss of a loved one through suicide. We, the Police, had seen an increase in mental health issues during the first few weeks of the Coronavirus Lockdown where a lot of core services were reduced as they were asked to do their part to prevent its spread. Unfortunately this left vulnerable individuals without the support within the community that they needed. Now as we face a second lockdown it is so important that we draw attention to issues of MH and to support those charities and groups who want to provide help, support and guidance.

When we look around at our friends, family and colleagues we need to think about what is going on behind the outwardly happy exterior. It is so important to really check in with your loved ones! To ask if they are ok!

In September 2019 we lost our dear friend Mark Bushby. Mark was selfless he was always thinking of others and wanted to help and support us whenever we needed him. I did not realise that beneath the surface he was hurting and dealing with anxiety and Mental Health Issues. I have spent many a day thinking about Mark and the heartache he has left behind for his wife and children. I still expect him to walk into the room at our NCT reunions or hearing his laugh! Mark we miss you!

So I am walking against Suicide and for my friend Mark! This October (2nd-4th) my good friends James, Simon and I are walking from Bristol to Reading over three days unsupported to raise money for Calm.

Here’s why:

On average, 125 people take their own lives every week in the UK.

75% of people who take their own lives are not known to mental health services or have not been in touch with mental health services within the last year.

135 people are directly affected by every suicide.

We’re coming together across the country to send a message that that’s not ok. We’re taking to the streets, parks, pavements, public footpaths and promenades to walk against struggling in silence, against being alone, against living miserably.

Anyone can hit crisis point. CALM’s free, anonymous and confidential helpline and webchat are there for anyone who needs support. They’re open from 5pm-midnight every day. Just £8 is enough to fund a professionally-trained helpline worker to answer a call that could save a life. Your support will help fund CALM’s life-saving services when they’re needed most.
